§ Philip Sutton R.A (British, born 1928), two large Fulham Pottery vases, each painted with stylised faces, painted signatures and dated 1989 (2) 50cm (20in) Other Notes: Sutton initially trained as a painter at the Slade from 1948-53, where his tutors recognised him as gifted and introduced him to the dealers, Rowland, Browse and Delbanco who helped him sell his first paintings to Phillip Pears and Benjamin Britten. During the early 60s he moved to Fiji where he painted tropical scenes, and it was whilst there that he became known back in the UK as one of the British Artists who "epitomised the exuberant sixties". In 1976 he was invited to become an RA by Hugh Casson, and afterwards began to experiment with painting ceramics stating "I've always liked the idea of drawings that bend." He was later commissioned by the Fulham Pottery to work alongside the potter Jean-Paul Landreau and this resulted on an extremely successful exhibition on Cork Street in 1987. The pair continued to collaborate for some time, producing wares on a large scale.
