Francis (Frank) H. Schell (American, 1834Â1909); Illustration of Man and Woman with horse and cart moving their possessions; probably of the Civil War Era or the aftermath. Pencil and ink wash on paper or board; matted and framed and signed lower right recto. Appears in good condition with light mat burn, not examined out of frame. Height of art 8 inches (20.3 cm.) X width of art 6 1/4 inches (16 cm.). NOTE: Schell was an artist, illustrator, and lithographer in Philadelphia before coming to New York where Frank LeslieÂs Illustrated Newspaper hired him as a Âspecial artist in 1861. He also illustrated the aftermath of the Civil War for Century Magazine and illustrated books about the History of the Civil War. Many of his works are in the Becker Collection of the Boston College Libraries; "Drawings of the American Civil War Era."
