Description
Translation provided by Youdao
5th-6th century AD. A pair of bronze annular brooches of similar size; one formed as a plate with 10mm overlap to the junction, secured by a small rivet, ferrous remains from an iron pin filling the attachment hole, decorated with a series of punched annulets; the other with narrow band and 12mm overlap, void to the pin-hole with ferrous deposits to both faces of the brooch, decorated with radiating punched lines. Cf. MacGregor, A. & Bolick, E. A Summary Catalogue of the Anglo-Saxon Collections (Non-Ferrous Metals), BAR British Series 230, 1993, p.87, item 10.28. 3.35 grams total, 42mm (1 1/2"). Found Droxford, Hampshire, UK. Brooches of this type were worn in pairs at the shoulders to secure the tubular peplos dress; they are not especially durable and may have needed replacing, as appears to have been the case here.
