Mid 3rd millennium BC. A carved alabaster jar from southern Mesopotamia, with narrow base and broad neck, flared rim; incised grid of cuneiform inscription of seven lines in Sumerian text; line six being a repetition of line one and not included in the translation: 'To (the deity) Dumuzi-abzu, Amamah, wife of Lugal-uTAK, the overseer of  , has presented (this vessel) for (the sake of) his life.' 2.2 kg, 24.4cm (9 3/4"). From the private collection of a North West London lady; previously with a central London gallery; formerly acquired before 1990.
