This is a painting on leather or animal hide that depicts the three Jewish youths - Hanania, Azaria, and Mishael - who were saved by the Archangel Michael from death at the hands of the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar. The king had ordered all the people of Babylon to worship a golden image, and those who refused would be killed in a fiery furnace. The three youths refused to worship the image and were sentenced to die. The king ordered the furnace to be heated seven times hotter than normal and the youths thrown inside, but the Archangel Michael intervened and protected them from being harmed. Not a single hair on their head or body was burned, and when the king realized what had happened, he ordered everyone to leave them alone and praised the God of Israel for protecting them. The story is from the Book of Daniel and illustrates the power of faith and belief. In Babylonian literature, the three youths were called Shadrach, Mesach, and Abednego, The painting was done on cow hide or animal hide and reflects art from the Eastern Orthodox Church. It is encased in glass and signed in Ethiopian script in the lower left and titled above the heads of the three youths. The overall size is 37 1/4 x 27 1/4 in. wide and the sight size is 29 x 20 in. wide.
