This lot consists of two thermoplastic cases with farm themes. The first features a tintype of a woman in period clothes. The tintype is a ninth plate. The embossed covers feature a farmer with a woman who is probably his wife, both holding pitchforks, and the motif is repeated on front and back (Krainik 374, American Gothic). The velvet lining has green scrollwork and the clasp is snug. The case has a small chip on the left edge, but still very attractive overall. The case was made by Littlefield Parsons in the 1850Â’s and measures 3 x 2 9/16 in. wide. The case design predates Grant Wood's famous painting of an Iowa farm couple (American Gothic 1930). The second case has an ambrotype of a gentleman with a beard and bow-tie. The ambrotype is a ninth plate and the embossed covers feature wheat and farming implements, a motif which is repeated on front and back (Krainik 375, Agrarian Motif). The velvet lining has light wear, and the case has a snug clasp and a chip near the clasp. The case was made by Scovill in the 1850's and measures 3 x 2 9/16 in. wide.
