Description

This lot consists of three thermoplastic cases with fruit and floral themes. The first case has a tintype of gentleman sporting a bow-tie and goatee. The tintype is a ninth plate, and the case was manufactured by Holmes, Booth & Haydens, a company in Waterbury, Connecticut, that made copper-silver plates for daguerreotyping. The embossed covers feature a basket with fruit, and the motif is repeated on front and back (Krainik 402). The velvet lining is in great condition, and the case has a snug clasp and a nick and small chip at two corners. The tintype can be lifted to reveal the Holmes, Booth & Haydens label underneath. The case was probably made in the mid 1850’s and measures 3 x 2 9/16 in. wide. The second case has a tintype of a young girl in a period dress. The tintype is a sixth plate and hand-colored. The amber velvet lining is soft and pliable, and the embossed covers feature strawberries in an oval, a motif repeated on front and back of the case (Krainik 177, Strawberry Motif). The tintype lifts out to reveal the Littlefield Parsons label underneath. The clasp is snug and the case measures 3 3/4 x 3 5/16 in. wide. The last case has two different covers with an ambrotype of a woman with beaded hair. inside. The ambrotype is a sixth plate and hand-colored. The case has a great label by Littlefield Parsons, an early manufacturer of daguerreotype and Union cases. The embossed covers feature an oval with grapes in the center on the front (Krainik 187) and an oval with flowers in the center on the back (Krainik 198, Three Roses). The clasp is snug and the case has nicks at two tips on top. The case was made around 1857 and measures 3 3/4 x 3 5/16 in. wide.
