This is a thermoplastic case with an ambrotype of a young gentleman wearing a suit and bow-tie. The ambrotype is a sixth plate and hand-colored. The embossed covers feature birds at a water fountain, and this motif is repeated on front and back (Krainik 172). The ruby velvet lining is soft and pliable and the clasp is snug. The case has a chip in the upper right and was made by S Peck in the 1850’s. It measures 3 3/4 x 3 5/16 in. wide.
