These are thermoplastic cases with ambrotypes. The first case has an ambrotype of a young man with sideburns. The ambrotype is a sixth plate and hand-tinted. The embossed covers feature geometric scrollwork that is repeated on front and back of the case (Krainik 276). The ruby velvet lining is attractive, the clasp is snug, and the corners are sharp. The case was probably made in the 1850’s and measures 3 7/8 x 3 1/2 in. wide. The second case shows an ambrotype of a bald man with a bow-tie and sideburns. The ambrotype is a sixth plate and hand-colored. The ruby velvet lining has very light wear, and the embossed covers feature a vase with still-life, a motif repeated on front and back (Krainik 174, Jardiniere of Fruit). The case has tiny nicks at the top corners and a nick along the back edge, and the clasp is snug. The case was made by Littlefield Parsons in the 1850's and measures 3 3/4 x 3 1/4 in. wide.
