This is a thermoplastic union case with two different covers, and the cameo center may be very rare. The case has an ambrotype of a gentleman with a large polka-dotted tie, and the ambrotype is a sixth plate. The front cover features a white cameo with decorative scrollwork and we have not been able to locate the cameo in Krainik or Berg. It seems to be a variant of Krainik 554, but 554 is smaller and houses a ninth plate, and the cameo faces left, not right. The back cover features a decorated oval with scrollwork (Krainik 252, Geometric / Scroll). The clasp does not fit snugly and the case has light nicks on the back, but overall is still very attractive. The back case was made by Scovill in the 1850’s and measures 3 3/4 x 3 1/4 in. wide, and for that reason we believe the front case was made by Scovill too. Exceptionally rare.
