Description
Translation provided by Youdao
This is a thermoplastic union case with an ambrotype of a young man who might be a Confederate soldier. The ambrotype is a quarter plate and hand-tinted, and the young man is wearing what appears to be a Confederate overcoat and a watch chain. The embossed covers feature a fiddler playing at a hoe-down, there are couples and children dancing to the fiddler’s tune, and the motif is repeated on front and back (Krainik 34, Money Musk); Money Musk is a reel that was popular in Scotland and made its way to North America in the 1800's. The clasp is snug and the ruby velvet lining has light wear, but the case has a crack near the inside of the lining. The case was made by S Peck in the 1850’s and measures 3 15/16 x 4 7/8 in. wide, and it is scarce and very attractive.
