This lot consists of two thermoplastic union cases with photos from the Civil War era. The first case has ambrotypes of a man and woman, probably husband and wife. The ambrotypes are both sixth plates and depict the couple in fine dress. The embossed covers feature a woman holding a child, with a dog next to them, and the motif is repeated on front and back (Krainik 141, The Faithful Hound). The clasp is snug and there are small nicks at two tips. The case was made by Littlefield Parsons in the 1850’s and measures 3 5/16 x 3 3/4 in. wide. The second case has an ambrotype of two children, possibly twins. The ambrotype is a sixth plate, and the case is unusual because there are two different designs on the covers. The front features a woman holding a child, with a hound next to them (Krainik 141) and the back has a geometric design (Krainik 288, Geometric). The velvet lining is very attractive and the clasp is snug. The hinges have some give and there are small chips near the bottom corners, but it is still hard to find images of twins from this era. The front cover was made by Littlefield Parsons and the back was made by Critchlow in the 1850’s; and the back measures 3 3/4 x 3 5/16 in. wide, just like the Littlefield Parsons cover.
