This lot consists of two thermoplastic cases with tintypes. The first is a thermoplastic union case with a tintype of a young woman. The tintype is a sixth plate, and the embossed covers feature two birds near a bird’s nest; the motif is repeated on front and back (Krainik 169, Nesting Birds in Oval). The velvet lining has wear and the case has a small chip along the back rail, but the clasp is snug. The case was made by Littlefield Parsons in the 1850’s and measures 3 5/16 x 3 3/4 in. wide. The second is a thermoplastic case with a tintype of a young boy standing next to a fringed chair and a period rug in the background. The tintype is a quarter plate, and the embossed covers feature a geometric fleur-de-lis pattern that is repeated on the front and back covers (Krainik 75, Scroll). The velvet lining has wear and the double clasps are hard to shut close, but the boy strikes an handsome figure next to the chair. The case was made by Holmes, Booth, and Hayden in the 1850’s, it measures 4 13/16 x 3 15/16 in. wide, and is scarce.
