This is a thermoplastic union case with an ambrotype of a gentleman in fine clothes. The ambrotype is a sixth plate, and the embossed covers feature a woman playing a piano, and the motif is repeated on front and back (Krainik 145, The Music Lesson). The ruby velvet lining is soft and pliable, and the clasp is snug, and there is a small nick along the back edge. The case was made by Litlefield Parsons in the 1850’s and measures 3 5/16 x 3 3/4 in. wide.
