JAIN ALTAR WITH INSCRIPTION Bronze with inlays India , around 16th century, dated on the backside Dimensions: Height 26,5 cm Weight: 1840 grams A Jain altar depicting a central seated on a cushion in meditative pose called dhyanasana in the centre, protected by an umbrella canopy. The whole shrine has the shape of a house or alcove and depicts the 24 Tirthankaras, teachers and saviours who were responsible for the rebirth of Jain religion. The throne is supported by attendants and lions and numerous devotees are also represented. Different Buddhist symbols and attributes are found throughout the shrine, a pot-shaped kalasa as the top finial.
