2nd-1st century BC. A light blue oval chalcedony gemstone with flattened top and bottom, the upper side with the finely engraved portrait head of a noble Roman girl facing right, exquisitely worked details of hairstyle and dress. See a similar portrait on a gemstone of the Metropolitan Museum, accession number 42.11.26. 1.43 grams, 17mm (3/4"). From a private collection formed in the Netherlands; previously in a European collection formed prior to 1980. Gem and ring collecting was not an invention of the Middle Ages and Renaissance; the Romans were already collectors. The prestige of owning such pieces shone through the descriptions of Pliny, who recorded several notable donations of gems. Julius Caesar consecrated six cabinets of jewels in the Temple of Venus Genetrix, and Octavia's son Marcellus offered one cabinet in the Temple of Apollo on the Palatine.
