1136-1145 AD. BMC type i variant. Obv: profile bust right with star-headed mace before and STIEFNE legend. Rev: cross moline and fleurs with +EA[DP]A:ON:CA: legend for the moneyer Eadward at Canterbury mint. S. 1287; N. 885; cf. BMC [NK] 235, pl.LVIII, 2, for same type by moneyer Rodbert; see Allen. Dr. M., The Mints and Moneyers of England and Wales, 1066-1158, British Numismatic Journal 82, 2012 and Addenda and Corrigenda, British Numismatic Journal 86, 2016 for detailed listing of all recorded issues. See Early Medieval Corpus, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, EMC 2020.0240 (this coin"). 1.33 grams. ("). Found near Barfreston, Kent, 2020. The normal BMC type i penny, often called the 'Watford' type after the famous hoard found there in 1818, shows the king holding a fleur-tipped sceptre; this coin very clearly shows him to be holding a mace with a large six-pointed star head, with pellet at centre and this variant only occurs at the Canterbury mint; Barfreston(e) is situated to the south of Canterbury and is listed in the Domesday Book; the village still retains its Norman church of St Nicholas.
