Dimensions: 2-7/8" H x 16" Dia. Chinese Qing Dynasty Period, sancai glazed porcelain plate. Potted in shallow vessel form, thick and large, with broad wide central interior, rounded cavetto gently tapering to open wide, with straight open lip, raised with round shallow draft, slight concave base. The exterior hand painted ornamentations are rendered in sancai design color. Sancai meaning "three glazes" of a low fired lead glaze based style of decorating earthenware pottery regardless of the actual number of colors of the item. If there is a technical explanation of the term it might be that the colors actually are based on specifically three different oxides i.e. iron giving yellow to brown hues, copper giving green or occasionally brown colors and the rare cobalt for blue. The colors can occur as monochromes or together, balanced, elegant and exquisite, the composition is sophisticated, simply a feast for the eye. Mark on base, a six under glazed blue script characters reign mark, enclosed within double fine rings, Made in The Years of Kangxi Reign Period of Great Qing Dynasty.
