15th century AD. An iron double-edged sword of Oakeshott Type XVIIIa with fairly slender blade of flattened diamond-section form, narrow fuller, hexagonal-section guard of style 2 with straight arms, style H pommel. See Oakeshott, E., The sword in the Age of the Chivalry, Woodbridge, 1964 (1994).874 grams, 90cm (35 1/2"). Property of an East Anglia, UK, gentleman; acquired in the 1990s. The grip of this typology was often in leather over cord and wood. The pommels were often engraved with a coat of arms. Examples show almost every kind of hilt used during the 15th century, from the classic forms of the 13th century to all the new varieties of pommel and cross which developed after 1400.
