Neolithic Period, 5th-3rd millennium BC. A very large and superbly polished veined greenstone axe of lentoid section, slightly convex cutting edge and almost parallel rounded sides tapering to the rounded butt; with a custom-made display stand. See Evans, Sir J., The Ancient Stone Implements, Weapons and Ornaments of Great Britain, London, 2nd edition, 1897, fig.76 and pp.130-133, referring to similar examples.2.2 kg total, 34 grams including stand (13 1/2"). Property of a Brussels gallery; acquired from New York, USA; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no. 10462-171049. Axes of this size, especially when made from 'exotic' stone types, were often made for ceremonial rather than practical use; it has been suggested that such purposes as 'bride price' or as a symbol of rank or status are possible uses.
