A moulded terracotta lamp with plain ring handle, shoulder with grapes and tendrils framed by two ridges, filling-hole and air hole in lower field with three concentric inner circles below, heart-shaped nozzle, basal ring with two circular grooves; the discus with Hercules capturing the Ceryneian Hind. Property of a West Essex gentleman; formerly in a 1980s private collection. This group of lamps (Bussière D X 10 lamps of Loeschcke type VIII) had various unusual shoulder decorations. One series is dedicated to the labours of Hercules. This oil lamp represents the story of the Ceryneian Hind in which the goddess Artemis loved and protected this stubborn little deer, which had gold horns. Hercules was challenged to capture the delicate hind without hurting it. The deer was tracked by Hercules for an entire year before eventually capturing it without causing any harm.
