A substantial carnelian gemstone with finely-cut intaglio sphinx in profile resting on a baseline with wings spread and S-scrolled tail raised, one foreleg raised above a saltire; set into a later sympathetic gold ring; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. 9.02 grams, 24.95mm overall, 19.49mm internal diameter (approximate size British T, USA 9 1/2, Europe 21.26, Japan 20) (1"). Property of a Birmingham, UK, collector; acquired from a London gallery; formerly in the private collection of Mr I Bolsi of West London, UK; acquired on the London art market in the 1990s; accompanied by a receipt and certificate of authenticity from Atticart Ltd as Etruscan, and an Art Loss Register certificate number S00113066 dated 28 April 2016.
