A flat-section silver finger ring with disc bezel, intaglio facing figure of Minerva (Greek Athena) with raised right hand holding a very stylised image of the goddess Fortuna, spear resting on left shoulder and shield resting on the ground held with the left one, wearing a flounced and pleated robe (peplos"). Cf. Henkel, F., Die Römischen Fingerringe der Rheinlande und der Benachbarten Gebiete, Berlin, 1913, item 421, for type.2.23 grams, 16.39mm overall, 13.63mm internal diameter (approximate size British D, USA 1 3/4, Europe 1.15, Japan 1) (1/2"). From a Dutch private collection; formerly in a European collection, acquired before 1980. The image of armed Minerva appears often on the bezel of Rhine rings, especially on cornel stone, where she is invariably represented armed (Henkel, 1913, pl.LXXV, figs.107-110"). [No Reserve]
