Description
Translation provided by Youdao
8th-12th century AD. A copper-alloy discoid mount with repoussé design of nimbate military saint holding shield and spear; the figure has short, curly hair and wears a characterful expression with attentive round eyes, long, straight nose and pursed lips; pierced for attachment. 3.34 grams, 37mm (1 1/2"). Property of a West Essex gentleman; formerly in a 1980s private collection. Many of the early Christian saints were soldiers in the Roman army who had converted to Christianity and who refused to partake in the Imperial cult rituals pledging loyalty to the emperors, and to their anti-Christian policies.
