Julia Maesa, grandmother of Elagabalus, arranged her marriage to her grandson in the hope of making the young Syrian emperor more acceptable to the Roman populace. Elagabalus, who had a reputation for sexual depravity and who could not persuade his wife around to his ways, soon divorced the empress, who retired to private life (probably with a good deal of relief.) Her coinage commenced at her elevation to rank of Augusta upon her marriage in 219 AD, continuing until her divorce in 220/ early 221 AD. [No Reserve]
