220 AD. Wife of Elagabalus, Rome mint. Obv: IVLIA PAVLA AVG legend with draped bust right. Rev: CONCORDIA legend with Concordia seated left, holding patera, resting left arm on throne; star in left field. RIC 211; RSC 6a; Sear 7655.2.29 grams. ("). From the private collection of a retired Suffolk gentleman. Julia Paula was descended from one of the most noble families of the old Roman aristocracy. Julia Maesa, grandmother of Elagabalus, arranged her marriage to her grandson in the hope of making the young Syrian emperor more acceptable to the Roman populace. Elagabalus, who had a reputation for sexual depravity and who could not persuade his wife around to his ways, soon divorced the empress, who retired to private life (probably with a good deal of relief.) Her coinage commenced at her elevation to rank of Augusta upon her marriage in 219 AD, continuing until her divorce in 220/ early 221 AD. [No Reserve]
