184 AD. Rome mint. Obv: M COMMODVS ANTON AVG PIVS legend with laureate head right. Rev: PM TRP VIIII IMP VI COS IIII P P legend with Fides standing right, holding bowl of fruit and corn-ears. RIC 75; BMC 123; Sear 5670.2.69 grams. ("). Ex Yavuz collection. Son of Marcus Aurelius, Commodus was weak in character and proved himself an unworthy successor to his legendary father. Soon after his accession Commodus fell prey to the influence of a succession of favourites. Fortune happened to smile on the Empire during the course of his rule, which saw only one serious military problem in the form of an uprising in northern Britain. Sources suggest that Commodus became insane in his later years, believing himself to be Hercules reincarnate and fighting wild beasts in the Colosseum; he even renamed Rome as Colonia Commodiana. On December 31st 192 AD, Commodus was strangled by an athlete who had been hired by conspirators who wished to have him killed. [No Reserve]
