Soon after his accession Commodus fell prey to the influence of a succession of favourites. Fortune happened to smile on the Empire during the course of his rule, which saw only one serious military problem in the form of an uprising in northern Britain. Sources suggest that Commodus became insane in his later years, believing himself to be Hercules reincarnate and fighting wild beasts in the Colosseum; he even renamed Rome as Colonia Commodiana.
