202 AD. Wife of Caracalla, Rome mint. Obv: PLAVTILLA AVGVSTA legend with draped bust right, Rev: CONCORDIA AVGG legend with Concordia standing left, holding patera and sceptre. RIC 363; RSC 1; Sear 7065.2.65 grams. ("). From the private collection of a retired Suffolk gentleman. Plautilla's father, Fluvius Plautianus, was a native of the North African city of Lepcis Magna. He was appointed to the praetorian prefecture and became one of the wealthiest and most influential individuals ever to occupy this position. Plautilla's father coveted the imperial throne for himself, strategically marrying his daughter to the then co-emperor, Caracalla, son of Septimius Severus. Disastrously, Plautianus made an enemy of his son-in-law and other powerful relatives, and in early 205 AD Severus had him struck down. Caracalla divorced Plautilla, who was banished to an island off the coast of Sicily, until she finally fell victim to her ex-husband in 211 AD. The couple had never had any genuine affection for each other and it is doubtful whether their marriage was ever consummated. Plautilla's coinage commenced following her marriage to Caracalla in 202 AD, when she was elevated to the rank of Augusta, and continued until her political downfall in 205 AD. [No Reserve]
