Description
Translation provided by Youdao
13th-14th century AD. A hand forged iron spearhead with thick socket and tiered leaf-shaped blade. See Gorelik, M.B., Tatarian-Mongol Armies, Moscow, 2002 (in Russian), p.66 no.20, for a similar spearhead from Prnkubanya. 309 grams, 28cm (11"). Property of a London gallery; previously from a private British collection; formerly acquired from a European gentleman; acquired in the 1990s and earlier. Mongol spears were generally light, some having hooks to pull an opponent from his saddle. But when the Mongols acted as heavy cavalry they were well protected by their armour and fought in hand to hand combat with spears, swords and maces, defending themselves with shields. Condition Report Fair condition, cleaned and conserved.
