Translation provided by Youdao
11th-12th century AD. An iron broad axe with wide flared blade, curved edge, narrow triangular socket with lateral spurs above and below, squared rear. Cf. a River Thames find in Williams, G., Pentz, P. & Wemhoff, M., Vikings Life and Legend, London, 2014, item 58. 626 grams, 18.5cm (7 1/4"). Property of an East Sussex, UK, teacher; previously in a Dorset, UK, private collection formed in the 1990s. Broad axes appeared in the second half of the 10th century and are the type most characteristic of the Viking Age. They were usually not bearded, but nevertheless the cutting edge could be as long as the length of the axe-head, resulting in a triangular type of shape. [No Reserve] Condition Report Fine condition, cleaned and conserved.
