17th-18th century AD. A hand-forged iron axehead with swept blade and D-shaped socket with flat rear. See Glosek, M., Pó?no?redniowieczna bro? obuchowa w zbiorach polskich, Warszawa-?ód?, 1996, pl.XVIII, lett.A, for type. 2.5 kg, 36cm (14 1/4"). Property of an English gentleman; formerly with a UK gallery, acquired in the 2000s. The form corresponds to the type of axe commonly used for executions early in the French Revolution. Prior to the introduction of the mechanical device known as the guillotine, medieval and modern Europe depended on the local headsman with his axe, and every large town had an executioner. This popular form of axe, of type IX in the Glosek classification, remains unchanged since the 13th century AD. [No Reserve] Condition Report Fine condition.
