3rd millennium BC. A bronze axehead with a slender scooped blade, round socket and extension to the rear. See Gernez, G., Larmament en métal au Proche et Moyen-Orient: des origines a 1750 av. J.C., Paris, 2007, fig.2.7, for the type. 425 grams, 19cm (7 1/2"). Ex Abelita family collection, 1980-2015. The axe blades of the second half of 3rd millennium BC evidence contacts with Luristan and its neighbours, especially with the Elamite Kingdom of Susa. This specimen belongs to sub-type H 2.C.a of the Gernez classification, typical of the Sumerian culture, appearing early on between 2600-2500 BC and becoming rarer at the beginning of the Akkadian Period (2350-2150 BC").
