13th-16th century AD. An iron axehead with expanding blade, elliptical socket and rectangular hammer to the rear, the blade decorated with zig-zag patterns. Property of a London gallery; previously from a private British collection; formerly acquired from a European gentleman; acquired in the 1990s and earlier. A number of such axes have been found in the Baltic countries and Poland, most dating between the second half of the 13th-15th century AD. Visual sources confirm their use both in war or carpentry until the 16th century AD. Condition Report Fair condition, cleaned and conserved.
