12th-14th century AD. A very large lead vesica-shaped seal matrix cut half, bearing an incuse partial image of a stylised human arm extended left, holding a staff comparable to a bishop's crozier, a purse(?) suspended from the figure's arm, with legend: 'S[ ]TVMERNOLD'. 80 grams, 94mm (3 3/4"). Found whilst searching with a metal detector near Kirky Mallory, Hinckley and Bosworth, Leicestershire, UK, on 18th August 2005, by Robert Ward; accompanied by a copy of Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report number LEIC-5C37C0. The associated PAS report states in relation to the seal legend: 'Malcolm Jones has suggested this should read S[ECRE]TVM ERNOLD[I] 'seal of Ernold' and ascribes a date range of 1100-1350 AD for the seal. [No Reserve] Condition Report Fair condition.
