14th-15th century AD. A silver finger ring with ellipsoid bezel, undulating flange to the rim, intaglio with the Latin inscription DEO ('to God' or 'for God') between two Latin crosses. Cf. Portable Antiquities Scheme no.SWYOR-3D2CA1, for similar shaped ring, found in Yorkshire. 9.64 grams, 21.85mm overall, 17.34mm internal diameter (approximate size British K, USA 5 1/4, Europe 9.95, Japan 9) (1"). Ex collection of a Surrey, UK, gentleman; acquired on the UK art market; previously on the European art market before 2000. Religious dedicatory inscriptions on rings were very common in the Middle Ages. The ring could also have been offered as an ex-voto in fulfilment of a grace received. It may also have been worn as a protective object, invoking the presence of the Almighty (in this case DEO = with God"). Condition Report Fine condition.
