Description

Muse. Imperial Art, Rome, 1st century A.D. Marble. Provenance: Private collection. Measures: 78 x 35 cm. Marble sculpture representing the body of a muse. Unlike other works of this period, the beauty of the sculpture is not based on the static combination of folds of her dress, but in the taste for the creation of a harmonious and balanced piece as a whole. In this way, deeper folds are combined with softer ones, seeking a naturalistic treatment of the fabrics. It is a piece that reveals the great technical quality of the artist, who leaves aside hieratism and rigidity to accentuate movement through details such as the diagonal cut in the clothing. Roman sculpture comprises the sculptural work that developed throughout the area of influence of the Roman Empire, with the central focus on Rome; this happened between the sixth century BC and the fifth century. It originally derived from Greek sculpture, mainly by the inheritance of Etruscan sculpture and, later, already in a direct way during the Hellenistic period, by contact with the colonies of Magna Graecia and Greece itself. The Greek tradition was a constant reference throughout the history of Rome, but contradicting an ancient and quite widespread belief that the Romans were more imitators than creators, it is now recognized that they were not only able to assimilate and develop their sources with mastery, but also contributed in an original way to this tradition. This statement is especially relevant in the art of portraiture, a genre in which they achieved great prestige and left singular examples of great technical mastery and expressiveness; and also, in the field of decorative sculpture, a work present in the great public monuments, and in which they developed a narrative style of great strength and a typically Roman character. Dimensions 78 x 35 cm.
