Spanish school; 18th century. "The adoration of the kings". Oil on copper. Measurements: 43 x 32,5 cm. In this painting, an oil on copper of devotional type, destined to a private altar or particular chapel, we see the adoration of the Three Wise Men, with aposition of classic type closed on the left side and open to landscape on the right, centred in the foreground and with a skilful work of the lights, which emphasize the white figures, almost pearly, of the Virgin and the Child. In Spain, and specifically in Valencia, the school with which this painting may be associated, the change from the 17th to the 18th century did not represent a break with the previo tradition, but rather a continuation of it. In 1768 the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos was established, and this institution marked a shift towards a Baroque-rooted classicism. Through it, young artists were trained by José Vergara, Manuel Monfort, José Camarón, Vicente Marzo, Vicente López and Mariano Salvador Maella. On the other hand, the economic recovery led to a thriving indtrial andmercial bourgeoisie, which sought to distinguish itself socially through artistic patronage. At the same time, the Church gradually lost its monopoly as the only client of artists. All this led to a definite change in taste and also in the genres treated: religio painting now coexisted with bourgeois portraiture, still life, landscape, historical and mythological themes and genre painting.Dimensions: 43 x 32.5 cm.
