Spanish school of the third quarter of the 15th century. "The Trinity". Tempera painting on panel and gold ground. Measurements: 156 x 103 cm; 173.5 x 121 cm (frame). This is a Spanish panel, dated to the third quarter of the 15th century, almost entirely occupied by the Holy Trinity, with God the Father, the Holy Spirit and Jes Christ in the foreground, set against a half-red background. The subject of the Trinity has always posed difficulties for painters, as the essential unity of the three persons of the Trinity mt be expressed, one of them being an animal, with thepositionalplications that this entails. Here, however, the painter succeeds in reflecting this idea of unity through a balancedposition, a reflection of his knowledge of pictorial technique. The figures, magnificently treated, denote the artist's knowledge of Flemish primitive painting, particularly in the treatment of the folds, worked with great dynamism, and the Flemish-inspired costumes. At the corners of the symmetrical, balancedposition is the Tetramorphos, i.e. the symbolic incarnation of the four evangelists, an iconography already ed in the Middle Ages that associates the lion with Mark, the bull with Luke, the eagle with John and the angel with Matthew.Dimensions: 156 x 103 cm; 173,5 x 121 cm (frame).
