LL5 chondriteChelyabinskaya Oblast, Russia (54°49' N, 61°07' E)This exceptional slice of the Chelyabinsk LL5 meteorite was part of a highly observed and recorded superbolide explosion that occurred over Russia in February 2013. It has been calculated that the energy released during the explosion was 25 times that of the bomb which destroyed Hiroshima, Japan during World War II. This huge fall, said to be in the thousands of fragments, caused serious injury and massive structural damage. This slice, taken off a larger specimen, exhibits a black and white brecciated structure indicative of severe shock. The gray chondritic matrix contrasts sharply with the fresh black fusion crust of the meteorite's exterior. Weighing 11.2 grams and measuring 47 x 28 x 4mm (1 6/8 x 1 1/4 x 1/8 in)
