5th-7th century A.D. A bronze ring with V-section hoop and square bezel, later incised with a long cross and inscription in Greek letters 'IC' (Jesus) 'XP' (Christ), followed by a star. Cf. Hadjadj, R., Bagues Merovingiennes - Gaul du Nord, Paris, 2007, item 133 (Aulnizeux), for the type. 5.06 grams, 22.12 mm overall, 18.10 mm internal diameter (approximate size British P 1/2, USA 7 3/4, Europe 16.86, Japan 16) (7/8 in.) German art market before 2000. With a European gentleman living in the UK. Property of a Surrey gentleman. The ring belongs to the type 3a of the Hadjadj classification, of a category found in male graves, like the tomb of a warrior in Aulnizeux, found with a scramasax, a buckle and three knives.
