6th century A.D. A gilt radiate-headed broochposed of a deep semi-circular headplate decorated with a chip-carved Salin I type zoomorphic design depicting a crouching beast facing left, ridged bow and broadly triangular foot with a rounded knop at each corner, also chip-carved with what appears to be a second zoomorphic head, with nostrils formed as two small depressions to the terminal; remains of pin lug and catchplate to reverse. 6.64 grams, 44 mm (1 3/4 in.) Found whilst searching with a metal detector, Isle of Wight, UK, on 13 July 2017. Recorded by Isle of Wight Portable Antiquities Scheme Liaison Officer with reference numbers SZ 39717 and BNG 87130 (record id. IOW-B52767). Apanied by a copy of the Portable Antiquities Scheme report number IOW-B52767. The PAS report states that this brooch 'is a find of note and has been designated: County / local importance'.
