A brooch in the form of a stylised bird in profile, with a hooked beak, small eye, collared neck, arched foot and dotted detailing to the tail, small wing delineated at the top of the back; remains of gilding; remains of pin lug and catchplate to reverse. Cf. Hawkes, S., The Anglo-Saxon Cemetery of Bifrons, in the Parish of Patrixbourne, East Kent, in Anglo-Saxon Studies in Archaeology and History 11, pp.1-94. 2.35 grams, 24 mm (1 in.) Found whilst searching with a metal detector, Isle of Wight, UK, on 10 June 2017. Recorded by Isle of Wight Portable Antiquities Scheme Liaison Officer with reference numbers SZ 40014 and BNG 86894 (record id. IOW-055A79). Apanied by a copy of the Portable Antiquities Scheme report number IOW-055A79. The PAS report states that this brooch 'is a find of note and has been designated: County / local importance'.
