12th century A.D. A hand-forged iron Rus axehead with triangular-section narrow blade extending to a narrow curved edge, socket with lateral flanges. Cf. Kirpichnikov, A.N., Drevnerusskoe Oruzie, II, Moscow-Leningrad, 1966, in Arkheologia SSSR, vol. E1-36, especially axes nos.1,2, from ???????? and ?????????? (pl.XIII). 170 grams, 11.2 cm (4 3/8 in.). Acquired in the 1990s. Private collection, London, UK. Property of a Sussex, UK, teacher. The axe is of Baltic workman, type III of the Kirpichnikov classification. Type III axes have been found in Russia, in the Perm region, in Bilyarske, Finland, Gotland, Poland, Balkans and Serbia. P. Paulsen concludes that the axes are considered as a type in the Varangian group of North Baltic axes. [No Reserve]
