A LARGE IMPERIAL GUANGZHOU ENAMEL CIRCULAR BOX AND COVER, QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG MARK AND PERIOD, 1736 – 1795 清 乾隆御制銅胎畫琺琅蓋盒一件 乾隆年制款 The circular box with deep rounded sides rising from a short spreading foot, finely enamelled around the exterior with six oval cartouches enclosing lotus strapwork reserved on a turquoise ground, all reserved on a gold ground, the domed cover similarly decorated, the interior enamelled turquoise, the base inscribed with a four-character mark in iron-red(2) Height: 16cm Diameter: 37cm Similar large Guangzhou enamel tribute boxes are known in the Palace Museum collection, Beijing, see Metal-bodied Enamel Ware, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Beijing, p. 245 & 254, cat no’s 231 & 239. Condition Report The exterior of the cover has five main areas of restoration to the enamel (circa 12 x 7, 12 x 6, 14 x 4, 15 x 6 and 13 x 3cm) predominantly to the blue ground, the box has restoration to two areas of enamel (circa 7 x 6 and 16 x 4 cm) and overall light enamel crazing. The interiors of the box and cover have been re-freshed.
