吳承硯1921年生於江蘇江陰，父親吳麟若好詩文及文物收藏，幼年時耳濡目染下，啟發繪畫天分。求學期間，深受徐悲鴻先生提點。創作常從自然萬物汲取創作泉源與靈感，將生命的節奏與律動繪於作品中。學院派出身，受東方美學及西方藝術激盪，孕育他對各類媒材的運用，水墨、書法、人物、風景及靜物皆深入精研。
