王北岳出身於達官世家，從小即受藝文薰陶，自1949年來台後先後任教於宜蘭與台北，1960年代開始以發揚篆刻藝術為己任，不僅任教於師範大學、中國文化學院、歷史博物館等，更先後與王壯為、曾紹杰等名家成立「海嶠印集」，籌組「忘年書會」、「中華民國篆刻學會」等，讓篆刻發揚光大。為台灣篆刻收藏第一人，成功發揚台灣篆刻界刻印、編書著作、收藏印鉥，致力篆刻藝藝術推廣教育面向，為全方位印人且影響力廣遠深厚。
