A WOOD NETSUK E BY KAGETOSHI OF A PUPPYWood netsuke. Japan, first half of 19th centuryA splendidly rounded netsuke; these snugly dogs are usually called “puppy”. Dark color with red-brown shimmering through. The inserted eyes are glowing black, with a very lively facial expression and fine, densely carved fur. The cord runs between its legs. The signature KAGE-TOSHI 景 利 is found on one of its legs inside a rectangle. The artist, known for small, densely executed netsuke, mostly worked with ivory and lived in Nagoya.
