AN IVORY NETSUKE OF A GOATIvory netsuke. Japan, 18th centuryA masterfully executed netsuke of a goat curiously turning its head back with its legs placed on top of a tree trunk. You can almost smell the goat and its nose is so finely crafted it appears like it is smelling us. It has large, dark inlaid eyes and flame-like fur with a plaited pattern. The underside is also quite lovely, with the legs, hooves and honeycomb pattern on the trunk. Animals from the Japanese zodiac, junishi, were very popular in netsuke art, however the goat is relatively rare. Goats were not known as pets in Japan. A very characteristic and powerful piece from the Kyoto school. Condition: Excellent condition Provenance: From an Austrian private collection A similar piece, described as 18th century, but of lesser quality is illustrated in Masterpieces of Netsuke art by Bernard Hurtig, No. 855. Published:: Illustrated in “Netsuke, OkimonoSagemono“ by Wolmar Zacken (1990) – no. 84LENGTH 4.1 CMThis lot is subject to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora [CITES].
