AN IVORY NETSUKE OF A SHISHI ON A PEDESTALIvory netsuke. Japan, 19th centuryA very unusually shaped netsuke of a guardian lion shishi, small and brawny with many curls, seated on a high pedestal. Its four slender legs are elegantly curved and standing on a base with a seal inscription on the underside, making this an ingyo netsuke. The inscription reads Fuku shi 福 示, or “blessing“.
