AN IVORY NETSUKE OF A SHISHI WITH PUPPYIvory netsuke. Japan, 18th centuryThe large lion dog shishi is snarling at the small puppy trying to climb on his back from behind. Both are lying on a bed of branches and foliage from the tree peony, the larger one with a loose ball in its mouth. Shishi in a peony grave symbolize a ruler’s power. An early piece, some honey brown patina – almost shriveled in some areas, strong himotoshi on the underside.
